Getting enough sleep helps protect your health and quality of life. Not sleeping well increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity and heart disease.
HOW CAN I SLEEP BETTER?
1. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
2. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
3. Don’t go to bed hungry, but avoid large meals, alcohol and caffeine too close to your bedtime.
4. Avoid using light-emitting screens such as a phone or computer just before you go to sleep.
5. Limit daytime naps to 30 minutes.
6. Include physical activity in your daily routine but avoid being active close to bedtime.
7. A room that is quiet, cool and dark can be ideal for sleeping. Many people run a fan at night to block out other noises which might keep them awake.
8. If you continue to have problems sleeping, talk to your primary health care provider to identify and treat any underlying causes.
